Getting Started

A Gaussian Splat is a 3D capture created from photos or video. Unlike traditional 3D mesh models, splats use millions of tiny colored points (gaussians) to recreate a scene with photorealistic detail. They preserve lighting, reflections, and fine details that meshes often lose, making them perfect for capturing real-world moments in immersive 3D.

There are two ways to import splats:

  • Drag & Drop: Simply drag .ply or .splat files from the Files app into GimmeSplat
  • Add Button: Tap the + button in the gallery view and select files from the file picker

GimmeSplat will automatically import your files and add them to the current gallery.

GimmeSplat supports:

  • .ply - PLY format Gaussian Splats (most common)
  • .splat - Compressed splat format

Any Gaussian Splat file in these formats will work, regardless of which tool or service created it.

Here are some places to find or create Gaussian Splats:

  • Polycam - Create splats from your iPhone/iPad photos
  • Luma AI - Web-based splat creation from video
  • Postshot - Desktop software for creating splats
  • Sketchfab - Some creators share downloadable splat files

You can also create your own from photos using various open-source tools.

When you import a splat file, GimmeSplat automatically looks for a matching thumbnail image. If your splat is named vacation.ply, it will look for vacation.jpg or vacation.png in the same location.

This makes it easy to have preview images for your splats in the gallery view without manually assigning them.

Galleries

Yes! You can create unlimited galleries to organize your splats however you like. Create galleries for different projects, locations, time periods, or any other way that makes sense for your collection.

To create a new gallery:

  1. Tap the gallery selector in the top navigation
  2. Tap "Manage Galleries"
  3. Tap the + button to create a new gallery
  4. Enter a name for your gallery

Tap the gallery name in the top navigation bar. A dropdown will appear showing all your galleries. Tap any gallery to switch to it instantly.

To manage your galleries:

  1. Tap the gallery selector in the top navigation
  2. Tap "Manage Galleries"
  3. To rename: Tap the gallery name and edit it
  4. To delete: Swipe left on the gallery or tap the delete button

Note: Deleting a gallery will remove all splats in that gallery from the app.

Spatial Controls

Use the drag gesture to move a splat. Look at the splat, pinch and hold, then drag your hand to reposition it anywhere in your space. Release to place the splat in its new position.

Use the pinch gesture with two hands. Spread your hands apart to make the splat larger, or bring them together to make it smaller. The splat scales uniformly from its center.

Use the twist gesture. Pinch with both hands on the splat and rotate them like turning a steering wheel. You can rotate freely in any direction.

Tap on a splat to open its control panel, then tap the Reset button. This will return the splat to its default size, rotation, and position in front of you.

Splat Sequencer

The Splat Sequencer lets you create choreographed presentations of your splats. Record the order and position of each splat, set timing between transitions, and play it back as an immersive slideshow. Perfect for showing off a collection or creating guided experiences.

  1. Open the Sequencer from the menu
  2. Tap the Record button to start
  3. Select a splat from your gallery to add it to the sequence
  4. Position the splat where you want it to appear
  5. Repeat for each splat you want to include
  6. Tap Stop to finish recording

Each splat's position, size, and rotation are recorded as part of the sequence.

In the Sequencer settings, you can adjust the transition duration (how long between each splat appearing). Use the slider to set anywhere from instant transitions to several seconds between each splat.

Yes! Toggle the Repeat option in the Sequencer controls. When enabled, the sequence will automatically restart from the beginning after the last splat, creating a continuous loop.

Yes! You can pause playback at any time and add new splats to the sequence. The new splats will be inserted at the current position in the sequence.

Troubleshooting

If a splat isn't loading, check:

  • File format: Make sure it's a valid .ply or .splat Gaussian Splat file (not a regular 3D mesh)
  • File size: Very large splats may take longer to load or exceed device memory
  • File corruption: Try re-exporting the splat from your original source

Gaussian Splats can be memory-intensive. To reduce memory usage:

  • Close unused splats: Tap a splat and select Close to remove it from the active view
  • Check Settings: Adjust quality settings if available
  • Restart the app: This clears any accumulated memory

Only splats you actively open are loaded into memory - splats in your gallery list don't consume memory until viewed.

Splats may import at unexpected sizes depending on how they were captured. Use the pinch gesture with two hands to resize the splat to your preferred size. You can also tap the splat and use the Reset button to return it to default size.

Privacy & Data

100% private. All your data stays on your device. GimmeSplat:

  • Has no cloud sync or server connection
  • Collects no analytics or usage data
  • Doesn't know how you use the app
  • Requires no account or sign-up

Your splats, galleries, and metadata never leave your Apple Vision Pro.

In GimmeSplat's Settings, you can enable the NSFW filter to hide any splats that have been flagged as potentially inappropriate. This is useful if you're showing your gallery to others.

To delete a splat:

  1. In the gallery view, long press on the splat thumbnail
  2. Tap Remove from the context menu
  3. Confirm the deletion

This removes the splat from GimmeSplat. The original file on your device (if imported from Files) is not affected.

To delete a gallery:

  1. Tap the gallery selector in the top navigation
  2. Tap Manage Galleries
  3. Swipe left on the gallery you want to delete, or tap the delete button
  4. Confirm the deletion

Warning: Deleting a gallery permanently removes all splats in that gallery from the app.
